This bar, located in one of Taiwan’s oldest urban neighborhoods, was reimagined within the shell of a historic building. Through design, we aimed to preserve the warmth of the past while responding to the local climate and rhythms of daily life.
The inspiration comes from the architectural language of the French colonial era in Southeast Asia—a style that finds balance between European classical proportions and the demands of tropical living. Arched openings, wooden slatted panels, hand-woven bamboo, and natural stone flooring form the foundation of the design, offering a contemporary interpretation of tropical aesthetics.
Most of the materials were locally sourced—from stone and reclaimed wood to native plants and woven mesh. This choice wasn’t just visual; it was about letting the space grow authentically from its surroundings. The hanging greenery is more than decoration—it also helps regulate humidity and temperature in this characteristically hot and humid part of Taiwan.
Given the subtropical climate of the old city, we emphasized openness and airflow. During the day, natural light fills the space; by night, soft warm lighting and tactile natural materials keep the atmosphere calm and breathable—never over-styled, but always inviting.
This is more than just a bar. It’s a quiet conversation between old city life, climate, craftsmanship, and contemporary tropical design. Our hope is that it stands the test of time—not because it follows trends, but because it belongs here.
